Job openings
We are always looking for smart, passionate, motivated, and
independent people regardless of where on the planet they may
be. We regularly work with colleagues and clients across many
time zones, as our team is spread over six countries and three
continents (North America, Europe, Asia), and we are hoping to
expand to all corners of the globe.
We practice flexible and human work hours, have open vacation
policy, and are open to full-time, part-time, freelancing,
working from home, other countries, continents and planets,
exploratory work, open-source contribution, etc.
We encourage our team to write about what we do via Sematext Blog, to talk
about it at conferences, meetups, SIGs, etc., to organize and
attend hackathons, to create
open-source and not just use it, and to use their time at
Sematext to have fun, grow as individuals, and do things that
help our customers and the world in general.
We also encourage everyone at Sematext to try working on
different things and find what fits them the most, what provides
them with the most pleasure and fun. Maybe that's working with
search or maybe it's with large scale databases. Maybe after
working on products one wants to try working with external
clients. Maybe a developer wants to do a bit more business or
vice versa. We're open to open-minded and curious people.

Search is our specialty, our bread and
butter
Nutella. We've been working with tools like Lucene and Solr since
their births, as well as with ElasticSearch since 2010. We've
even written books about Lucene and Solr, not to mention our
coverage of those technologies on our blog. Some of our products
are specifically aimed at improving the search experience. We are
looking to add more search experts to our team, both for work on
internal search-related products and services, as well as to
provide expert help to our customers. We tend to work remotely
with customers around the world, but there is also opportunity to
travel world-wide for those who want to travel.
People who will especially enjoy this position are those who like
interacting with customers (email, Skype, phone), understanding
customers' problems and requirements, those who like
designing/architecting and developing scalable, highly available,
fault tolerant systems for processing large volumes of documents
and queries.
This position is also great for those who are looking for an
opportunity to take their experience with search to a higher level
and become Search Tech Leads or Development Managers, to build,
run, and grow the core team of in-house as well as external search
engineers from wherever they are on the planet.
Put more formally, a person in this role will:
- Establish her/himself as a knowledgeable and professional advisor to our customers
- Provide expert-level consulting and development services to a wide range of our customers
- Observe and identify customer pain points, priorities, requirements, and success criteria
- Resolve non-trivial search issues involving Lucene, Solr, ElasticSearch and related technologies
- Identify opportunities to help customers with additional Sematext products and/or services
- Participate in the open source community through blogging,
answering questions on mailing lists, providing fixes and
improvements when possible, etc.
- Collaborate on internal Sematext projects and products

Some customers hire us as
expert consultants,
while others buy our
Lucene & Solr
Tech Support Subscriptions. When they face problems in their
production Lucene or Solr deployments they call us and we quickly
jump to the rescue. Providing tech support to our customers is
like a box of chocolate - you never know what you are going to
get. And that keeps it interesting. Plus, we get to feel like
heroes every time we save the day.
People who will especially enjoy this position are those who like
interacting with customers (email, Skype, phone), understanding
customers' production problems, troubleshooting new problems and
systems.

Besides Search, we are gaining expertise in processing, storing,
and analyzing large amounts of data with Hadoop, MapReduce, HBase,
Flume, etc. Our own
Search
Analytics and
Performance
Monitoring products store billions of rows of data. The right
candidate understands this is more than just some data - this is a
goldmine! And while we are proud of our goldmine with billions of
rows, some of our customers have even bigger mines - they have
hundreds of TBs of data that needs to be analyzed. We are looking
for people who not only get turned on by (big) data, but also know
what to do with it - Data Scientists with the healthy mix of
academic background and development skills.

Sematext's
Search
Analytics and
Performance
Monitoring basic functionality provides all sorts of nice
reports. That's great, we like it, and so do our customers - some
even want to pay for it. But reports are only the beginning. By
collecting this data we can do much, much more for our customers.
If you have the right background and experience, we don't need to
spell out what can be mined, what can be learned, where that can
be applied, and what sort of applications can be built on top of
this all.

Our servers (a few dozen EC2 instances, EBS volumes, etc.) and a
number of our BigAndSmallData applications (Hadoop, HBase, MySQL,
Solr, our own
Search Analytics
and
Performance
Monitoring, etc.) are in need of some BigOps love. We are
looking for somebody who:
- Has experience with AWS
- Has experience or interest in EC2 instance management
automation either with open-source tools or services like
RightScale
- Knows when it's time to leave AWS behind, when and how to
move to dedicated hardware in a real data center
- Has experience with Chef or Puppet or similar tools
- Has experience or interest in automating or simplifying
various things around software development, such as faster or
continuous testing and deployment
- Had some exposure to Hadoop and HBase, or is keen to get it
fast
- Knows Linux well
You get the idea. If you're our (wo)man, let's talk!
Interested? Please send your resume to

We've been in this field long enough to build a name and expertise
that attracts customers from around the world to us without us
having a single sales or marketing person on our team. We have a
growing list of new and repeat customers (a good number of them
don't allow us to list them on our customers page). We are
continuously expanding and improving our experise. We've built
new products that are in demand. We see interest, we have leads
and opportunities for growth and now we need the focus of
experienced Sales, Marketing, and Business Development
professionals to use the existing channels, create new ones,
establish mutually beneficial strategic partnerships, market our
products and services to new customers, etc. If that's you, we'd
love to talk with you.
